Verse 1 - Be imitators of God

  • Verse 3 - But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people
  • Verse 4 - Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving

Verse 7 - Therefore do not be partners with them

  • Verse 8 - For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
  • Verse 10 - and find out what pleases the Lord.
  • Verse 11 - Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them

Verse 15 - Be very careful, then, how you live

  • Verse 15 – (live) not as unwise but as wise
  • Verse 16 - making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil

Verse 17 - Therefore do not be foolish

  • Verse 17 - but understand what the Lord's will is

Verse 18 - Do not get drunk on wine

  • Verse 18 - Instead, be filled with the Spirit

3. Why is getting drunk a sin?

Because it provides a means for us to display a loss of all reason which distinguishes us from animals – We were made in the image of God.

1. What does it mean to submit ourselves to one another out of reverence for Christ (verse 21)?

  • If the wife submits/respects her husband, it’s easier for the husband to love her
  • If the husband loves the wife, it is easier for her to respect or submit to him
  • Neither of these comes before the other for we are to submit ourselves to one another out of reverence for Christ (verse 21)

1. What is meant by the phrase “In this same way…” in verse 28? What is the way that is referenced?

In the same way refers to the way husbands are to love their wives –just as Jesus Christ died as a result of sacrificing his body for his bride (the church), husbands are to give our entire lives for the sake of and the protection of our wives

2. What does this chapter say about the top three reasons for divorce today: Money, Sex and Alcohol? Why is there so much divorce these days?

Ephesians 5:18 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

3. The following verses state how a husband must love his wife.

  • Verse 25 - Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
  • Verse 28 - In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
  • Verse 33 - However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
