Proverbs Chapter 2

There are at least two perhaps three Bible study lessons from Proverbs Chapter 2.  We will add them as we study so check back for more later.  For now, check out what God says in the first eight verses from Proverbs Chapter 2.

Proverbs Chapter 2 Verses 1 - 8

Prov 20 Verse 2

2  My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,

2  listening closely to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding;

3  furthermore, if you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding,

4  if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure,

5  then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.

6  For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

7  He stores up success for the upright; He is a shield for those who live with integrity

8  so that He may guard the paths of justice and protect the way of His loyal followers.

There are several conditional statements in this text.  You can identify them by finding the word if.  Note them in the verses below:

Verses

1-2

The Condition to Be Met (signified by the word if)

IF you accept my words and store up my commands within you, listening closely to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding

 3

IF you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding,

 4

IF you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure,

If the conditions above are met, then the results of verse 5 are seen as shown below.  The word then is the key; it ties the result to the conditional if statement.  Also, note how the idea of the Lord's provision is expanded in verses 6, 7, and 8.

Verses

Result if Condition is Met (signified by the word then in vs 5)

5

you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God

6

For the Lord gives wisdom: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding

7

He stores up success for the upright; He is a shield for those who live with integrity

8

so that He may guard the paths of justice and protect the way of His loyal followers
