The Accommodation of God
Today is a great day to think about the accommodation of God. This topic stems from the idea of how God is constantly reaching out to His people. Before delving too deeply into how God performs accommodation, it important to understand the meaning of accommodation. The definition of accommodation can be seen in The American Heritage Dictionary which reads it is:
- to do a favor for; oblige.
- to provide for; supply with.
- to contain comfortably.
- to adapt; adjust.
- to settle; reconcile.
Now that there is a working understanding of the definition of the accommodation of God, it is time to see how a great God performs such a selfless act. God favors man. God enjoys His relationship with man. God’s desire is to bless man. Please note, “man” in this article is referring to both genders male and female alike, there is no differentiation.
Well, why does God have to accommodate man? It would be easy to state because He can, but more importantly He does because He desires to reach stretch down to man. God’s personality is total fulfillment of love. He created man in the image of Himself. Man was not an accident, or the result of biological organisms deciding their own fate (evolutionism). Man was constructed not cooked, and God saw fit to give man an incredible gift or favor in the beginning (His own image). The gift/favor was not just that of life, but creating man in His own image. Man received accommodation with his destiny; he was designed for greatness from the very conception. God, through this imaging, placed His character in man.
In Genesis Chapter 1, verses 26-27 state: “26 And God said let us make man in our own image after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the foul of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him (man); male and female created he them.” (King James Version, KJV)
Through accommodation God has provided for and supplied man with all of his needs. In the first book of the Pentateuch (Genesis) in the first chapter, God created all of the Earth and its fervor. Just to name a few things man might need are: the planet itself, light, night, sky, water, land, vegetation, moon, stars, heavens (universe), sea creatures, birds, animals of all kinds, and man.
God through His accommodation gave man an incredible world and also gave him dominion over it. The world has changed drastically since the biblical days in many ways. Picture living conditions then, and picture them now, the contrast is truly amazing. How did they live in those days with no cell phones, no web or internet, no microwaves?
Electricity may have not been discovered, but man has remained comfortable in this biosphere called earth. Man is comfortable because he has water to drink, food to eat, a sun to work by, and a night to sleep by. Man’s management of his dominion is not perfect, then again neither is he, but God’s accommodation remains. The accommodation of God is not just in the physical, but also in spiritual. God has accommodated man by sending the Savior named Jesus (the Christ). He was sent to correct an old problem called sin.
Sin entered the world when Satan, which means opponent, deceived man to sin against God. Man, through sin, became independent of God which caused a great chasm in the relationship between God and man. God needed to adapt or adjust the situation so man could be reconnected to God. God sent Jesus as propitiation or payment for man’s sin debt. This separation needed a remedy and Jesus was man’s way back to God. Jesus was the ‘reconciliation’ sent by God to bridge the gap caused by Adam and Eve when they partook of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. For the aforementioned reason Jesus has been referred to as the second Adam because he reestablished the relationship between God and man.
The picture is a perfect God constantly reaching down to a sin flawed creation (man), so that he (man) can have an everlasting existence with the creator. Jesus was and is and will always be the perfect accommodation for man’s sin debt. Jesus was God’s remedy for a lost world with a terminal future, and now there is a hope of an everlasting life with the God who cared so much for His creation He sent His only begotten Son to die on a cross.
